I am desired by the Directors of The Pacifio

Phosphate Company Limited to communicate with you in the

following circumstances

This Company is conducting similar operations

on the Island of Nauru (situated about 160 miles from

On Nauru the Ocean Island) to those at Ocean Island. labour employed has been chiefly Kanakas recruited from the neighbouring Caroline and Marshall Groups of Islande. The supply of labour obtained from these islands, however, is insufficient, and it has therefore been necessary to

employ Chinese coolies. This Company now requires a further supply of Chinese coolies, to take the place of those who have recently returned to their homes at the

end of their term of service.

The recruiting of the Chinese coolies for this Company is now in the hands of Messrs. Tendt & Co. of Hong Kong, who also act as Recruiting Agents for Samoa and other Colonies. My Directors are informed

the that, upon the suggestion of Sir Francis May, Governor of Hong Kong, Mesers, Wendt & Co. have on the 11th December, 1918, made an application to the Registrar
